Scotland host a Conference on tobacco smuggling and the cost of the losses to the Government in taxes avoided.
It has become a small business for some. With very cheap single tickets to fly to Europe, for as low as £10 each way during mid week, people are flying out and back twice a week, but not on their signing on day of course!!!
They return with their full duty free allowance both times and sell it all on for big profits. Some football supporters have no interest in their teams and organise to go to away games for the duty free only, in bulk, that they can bring back. Who is really gonna search a mob of drunk football fans??? Two day Xmas shopping bus parties are another way to bring back bulk as yet again they are rarely searched as the bus driver is only allowed so many hours to drive and to hold up a bus would cause a lot of hassle.
Truck loads are passing from France into Eire quite legally, and are then being moved over the border into Northern Ireland quite illegally!! From there to Scotland on the ferries to Ardrossan and Troon on a regular basis.
