I know exactly how he feels !  (see much further down)   I,too,was recently involved in a dispute with Scottish Gas which is owned by British Gas.

They sent a bill for the fitting of a supply of gas which I did not order nor want. Even worse the help line was given as help/scottishgas,co.uk    The sharp eyed will notice the lack of @   I eventually got customerservices@britishgas.co.uk

So I get another letter from British gas in Worthing England.  They have a central billing system now. Worthing are threatening to take me,who lives in Scotland, into an English Court over this matter.  This they cannot do !!!  They are going to send bailiffs.  Again,this they cannot do. Bailiffs cannot operate in Scotland.

British Gas have shot themselves in the foot by having central billing, based in England. If a Scottish customer does not pay a bill and the Gas wish to pursue it,they must instruct an English solicitor, to instruct a Scottish solicitor, to raise the action in a Scottish Court. No Scottish resident can be taken to a Court in England over debt. Any action must take place in Scotland.

Assuming that the bill was not paid because people were broke,it is unlikely that the Gas company could afford to add on two solicitors bills to the gas bill and hope to get any return! They are going to loose an awful lot of money when Scottish people just don't pay this next Winter quarter's bill and sit it out to see if the gas people will risk all the legal fees involved on top of the gas bill.
