What a smashing idea!!    When these begin on motorways I for one will not be traveling on them and taking A roads instead.

Lorry drivers actually do tail gate each other just now. Here is how it works. One driver will feel a bit tired. He moves out, as if to pass one in front, but flashes a lights code with headlights. He then slows and moves in behind.

They travel along at the same speed and the front man flashes his bright red hazzards to warn the driver behind should conditions change ahead. He then eases off the throttle. This slip streaming also saves on fuel use.

The rear driver can relax a bit, tucked in at the rear of his front man  They then swap places.

You will see this all the time with lorries of the same company in convoy.
