Extraordinary story of WW2's Starfish Sites designed to look like burning cities which saved 2,500 lives | Mail Online

I live in the Clyde valley near to Glasgow Airport which was a Royal Navy air station during WW2  I have been told that fake buildings were erected about 800 feet up on top of the valley, to try and decoy German bombers after their long flight. This was done to save the shipyards of the Clyde near and in Clydebank which was heavily bombed. Further down, towards Ayrshire, depots of dummy tanks and stuff were laid out to look like camps.
My father told a story of being home on leave and watching a German bomber going for a train on the Glasgow to Ayr line. His stick of bombs fell just short and landed in a paddock, where the local farmer kept his prize bull. Score Bull killed, train safe.
He was in the Fleet Air Arm, which was the flying side of the Royal Navy, on board HMS Illustrious, based in Alexandria and fighting in the Mediterranean. When the ship was being repaired, after a lot of heavy action, he and his pals went camel riding at the pyramids!!  What a crazy war!!
