How times change! Ireland joined the EU before the Uk did and received billions in grants,loans and business from there giving them a boom time. Now much later austerity has arrived and on top of that the new poorer member countries are draining away the profits made in the boom years.
Perhaps that is why it is called boom and bust !! .
