Drivers get surprise at sight of air-to-air missiles being transported on M8 - The Daily Record

What do folk want? Of course they transport them by road, by sea, by air, by rail. How else would they move them round the country?  More more worrying than these dummies, is the transportation of real nuke submarine missiles, by road.
Culport, near Loch Lomond, is the base of the four nuclear subs that the Royal Navy has in their fleet. Every so often, missiles are loaded onto a lorry and transported, through Glasgow city centre, to the Navy's repair and servicing depot at Beith in Ayrshire. They normally have two armed police officers as escort.
At one time they crossed the Erskine bridge from the Glasgow side, travelled up the M8 motorway, taking the cut off for Paisley/Linwood. They then travelled through, the birthplace of William Wallace, Elderslie and then through the town of Johnstone onward to Beith in North Ayrshire.  That stretch of motorway, Linwood, Elderslie and Johnstone are all within Renfrewshire Councils area. They passed a local law which made Renfrewshire nuclear free. Thus the Ministry of Defence were forced to re route.
They now travel along the Glasgow bank of the river Clyde into Glasgow city centre and across town towards Barrhead where they join the main route from Glasgow to Ayr, cutting off at Beith.  I suppose that they got to be repaired/serviced, but why not do it on site where they re stored and the subs are based as opposed to transporting them through urban conurbations.
Some years ago, I was friendly with a cop, who actually escorted these things, as part of the firearms unit.he told me about a night that he was on escort duty and the radio call came out that officers were under attack by a gang within the Rangers FC social club car park. Weapons were being used and all police had to assist. He queried the position in that he was escorting nuclear missiles and was told to leave them and get to Ibrox!!!  When he arrived there, a full scale battle was taking place. One officer was on the ground, with a ned standing over him, about to bring down a samurai sword on him. This friend of mine shot him!! When the gun went off, the battle came to a swift end, as the neds knew that officers were prepared to shoot. He ended up being suspended for saving a fellow officer's life!!  The suspension was lifted after a hearing.
