Lotteries.

We in the Uk have a National Lottery  and have access to a Europe wide Euro millions Lottery. The former started as a Saturday draw and progressed to a Wednesday and Saturday draw, Euromillions came on the scene on the coat tails of the Uk one, initially, on a Friday night draw. This too, has expanded to a Tuesday and Friday draw system., If it is not won on the draw night it rolls over to the next draw.Fair enough.
These draws are run on huge computers. Shopkeepers have a phone link to the mainframe and they get 6p in the pound taken in, for their time.The numbers picked are sent down the line. So you pick your numbers, pay your money and pray!! Now that famous phrase, so beloved of American Economist and Politician, Edmund Burke,who used it all the time, but in actuality, nicked it from the very English, Oscar Wilde," lies, damn lies and statistics" comes into play.
In general, Rollovers seem to happen in the Summer, at holiday time and near Xmas. A very few, occur out with these times. The Euromillions has now, not been won for weeks and is a very tidy, £166 million running on Tuesday next. They've milked it, so it will be won on Tuesday, for certain or I will give £50 to charity!!!! This has followed a rollover on the Uk one, just prior to this run beginning. .
They produce reams of paper showing statistics of favourite numbers, in general,  by geographic area and by rich and poor areas. So they must record the number of hits that EACH number gets, otherwise, where do all these statistics come from? Exit polls ??? If they can record popular numbers then, conversely, they can record unpopular ones, too.
They have a number of sets of balls which they put into one of three machines, The machines have names and a member of the public, somewhere, chosen at random, picks one from three. The ball set to be used, is picked, at random, as well, by the same method. This is all done long before the draw. Not let's suppose as a completely, hypothetical exercise, they want to fix it. How could it be done?
The picking of sets and machine by members of the public could be smoke and mirrors. Who are these random members of the public? A relative, an actor, whatever. How does the said member of the public know, that each envelope, does not contain the same machine name? Even if cards are shown to Joe Sixpack and then put in, they only pick the envelope. They don't pull out the card. Is their a signature on the one that they put in?  Nope!!!
Is the case with the balls in it, which go into the machine relevant to Joe six Pack picking case number 6. They don;t see the case, never mind sign and seal it!!!! It could be any case that appears in the show. it don't even have a number on it which could be swapped even if there were numbers on them.  I touched on some of this in another post.
Bingo Halls, prior to computer hook ups used a blower machine, many still do, to shuffle ping pong balls in the air, with one falling into the mouth of a delivery tube. Strangely enough, the lottery draw does the same thing. The case of balls is brought out, put in the machine and the numbers come out. It is the same Bingo Hall system, live on TV.
Now if you remember science from school, hot air expands material and cold contracts it. In Bingo halls, machines could be cold, having just been switched on or hot, having been on, for a while. So the air inside is either hot or cold. The balls could be heated in a staff oven or cooled in a bar fridge or in any proportion prior to going in the machine. Cold books and hot books were printed to suit.The delivery pipe could have an inset making it narrower so hot balls would bounce away
Now, in our hypothetical case, the studio is roasting and therefore the machine is also roasting, either because it is there or  because it has be brought from a cold store to heat up, suddenly. The air inside is hot. The balls are brought on, in a case. Could they have been emptied out into the case from a deep freezer an oven or both.  You getting it???
The computers close down taking no more numbers, from stores or online, a while before the show. So unpopular numbers could,quite easily, be known. By cooling them up and leaving the popular ones hot or hotter, you could get the required number of cold balls, needed.for a possible 'winning line' from the unpopular pool. The computers could easily find a non winner set of numbers..!! You with me on my hypothetical journey, so far.
The case could have hot and cold balls in it and they all go into a hot machine. So I here you yell, the cold balls would heat up!!  Ha Ha Paddy.  But the hot balls would heat up further, as long as the studio is hotter than the heated balls  !!!! The difference would remain the same. So how do you get the 'right' ones to come out.?
The studio is hot, the machine is hot, some balls are hot and some cold. Okay so far? They all blow about and fall toward the aperture of the delivery tube. a cold ball will still be contracted, but beginning to heat up and hot ones expanded.There are all sorts of formulae for heat loss.Time is the controlling factor. So if the cold, unpopular balls go near that hole they can enter easier as they a slightly smaller. The bigger popular balls will not fit and bounce off !!! You then get an unpopular ball 'winning' line which nobody has picked.
Now, it is said that scrutineers look at the whole system in our hypothetical scenario.How easy would it be to exchange a piece of plastic pipe in a glorified bingo machine or the whole machine, after it has been checked over??  They are not sealed with signet rings in wax !!! You could have a voice over that Wille Effie and Fred, the scrutineers, looked at everything THIS AFTERNOON, before the show and signed off on it all. The ball cases would not be locked !  A flunky would come on, opens it and tip them in. Even if they were locked and the keys retained by third parties, they could be opened with a kirby grip or a lock pick!!! So the winning line would not win!
 More money in sales, would come in, due to the rise in prize money and more profits, huge profits would be made from each buy, because the bulk of the money was there the first time and the increases would be financed from the later income as it runs on needing less from existing funds to make up the total amount. Profits per unit buy would increase as it al rolled onward.
