BBC Weather | Johnstone

BBC Weather | Johnstone

My home town, Johnstone in the West of Scotland, about three quarters of a mile from the house, occupied by William Wallace, who went to school, with the monks and got married in Paisley Abbey some 5.5 miles away, apparently..
Mel Gibson and a mini bus full, popped into the Thorn Inn in Johnstone, while touring round, doing Wallace Country, in half a day, before making that film, with that abysmal accent!! The film Rob Roy was much better.
Dirty tricks took place as Braveheart was about to be filmed. A whole mock village was built up near Aviemore, to be used as a set and left as a museum. All sorts of money, was chipped in from Scottish tourist Board and from other places. The Irish Film board bettered the offer and they all de camped to Ireland. Very little of the film was made in Scotland.
This all began the threat of a renaissance of the Scottish film industry. Robert Carlyle, the pseudo Scot, was heavily involved in the hype. Paul Ferris, a rather infamous Glasgow enforcer and debt collector, for the late Arthur Thomson, got £100,000 advance for his life story. Arthur Thomson was termed as the Godfather of Glasgow, He went down to London to meet with the Kray Twins. Apparently, he proffered a sawn off shotgun, to them,in one of their establishments and said words to the effect, you will be staying out of Scotland? They looked at his face and agreed.
Anyway, they could not find a boy actor, sufficiently like Paul Ferris to play him as a pre teen, so the project was shelved. However, they had been given a huge advance to make the film, some of which was 'in the can' as it were, lieing in a storeroom. After many years, folk began to want a film or their money back and that rubbish Neds was flung together. Carlyle had long gone back to Lah Lah land to make a couple of movies, like that one, with the coloured guy, kilt wearing super drug manufacturer, who had to leave America and travel to Liverpool to find a factory to make the drugs. It got worse from there.
Carlyle, ever, the self publicist, had thought to retire, in a blaze of glory, having single handedly, revised the Scottish Film scene. It was an abject failure and so he went back to work in these two pot boilers. The other one was so bad I can't remember any of it.!! He hasn't been seen again. Lots of egg on face, probably the reason. He had been hanging out with people, that were a lot wider, than he thought that he was. Paul Ferris kept the money. It wasn't his fault now, was it???
