The £64,000 trolley raid: Scrap metal thieves steal 800 carts from Asda store... after paying £1 each for them

In the Uk, years ago, kegs containing beer/lager, were made of steel, which is a mixture of metals. Aluminium was brought into use, as it was much lighter than steel and therefore more kegs could go on the lorry, which was subjected to a weight restriction. More deliveries could be made, cheaper, blah blah blah. But, Aluminium is a pure metal, not a mixture. Empty steel kegs had, normally, been left in the car park or outside, near the store doors. Aluminium kegs were put out too. They began to disappear, overnight!! They were smelted down, poured into ingots of pure aluminium and sold as scrap. Dealers could deny buying stolen beer kegs, as the were now turned into ingots. It was a very profitable business.!!! Beer kegs were then locked up, securely, ending that racket.
Now, these shopping trolleys are going the same way. Old smelters, will have been dragged out of the corner of sheds, to be fired up. It is not an offence to have a smelter, nor do you need any kind of license. They are set up in abandoned factory units, farm buildings, outhouses and nurseries They are used at night, when there is less chance of seeing any smoke, as folks are asleep.
As most supermarkets are open 24/7 and rarely have cameras pointed out, always in, to watch their stock and tills, anybody can pull up in a van and load a pile of trolleys in the back and get away, very, quickly.
Supermarkets will now have to decide whether to install roof cameras, if they have none covering the car parks or ensure that most of their trolleys are securely chained up. Customers tend to leave them lying everywhere having loaded their cars and so they must be gathered in, regularly, instead of lackadaisically, as is done now.
