Cuba had been taken over by Fidel Castro. The Mafia and the Casino boys had been flung out of the country. However a small group of ex pats based in 'Little Havana' in Miami, Florida wanted things back the way that they were. The CIA wanted things back the old way,too.
Lee Harvey Oswald was giving out Free Cuba leaflets and arms and bombs were being stored in New Orleans. A mini air force was set up and based at the same Venice,Florida airport that was later used by Arabs learning to fly who supposedly flew planes into the Twin Towers. if an airport could only talk.
In between times this same Venice airport was used in the Iran Contra Saga with drugs coming in and munitions going out on a flight schedule basis. All sorts of black ops were practiced and started out from there to go into central and South America.
Kennedy did not back the Cubans and their air force was impounded. However they carried on and landed on Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. While screaming for American aid, which never came, the Cubans were killed, captured or got away. The whole escapade was a disaster.
