They are still humans just like us. We would demand compensation just as they are doing for some of the indignities and discrimination that prisoners have been and are made to suffer. Would you like to be locked up with a perfect stranger and perhaps two for up to 23 hours per day? You don't know if they are a violent gay couple with designs on a closer relationship, fraudsters or even both!!. With each one of them having to answer the call of nature in full view of the others, would you like that?. The deposits being left, steaming nicely , in the corner until one of them goes to empty the pot, possibly bullied into doing so or more sensibly on a rota system. Trying sitting eating a chocolate bar, while sitting on the toilet, after a good hot curry, the night before !!!!! Fortunately the slop out has gone and flushing toilets have been installed with a small divider. However, many jails are still overcrowded. They are in there to be punished, yes, perhaps rehabilitated. But it ain't Guantanimo Bay in the prison system, yet, although many seek to have it that way. You cannot rehabilitate or deter somebody from carrying out an action, by torturing them. I do not advocate smothering them with kindness and giving them goodies but a basic human standard of living, to me is their right, just as much as mine.
