High street stores are blowing £1bn a year on heating and don't shut doors

Sounds very sensible but heating costs are tax deductible so as long as they make a profit why bother! There is, of course, a psyco babble view that an open door is an invite to come in. Music playing and a waft of heat, especially on a cold day, are also inviting and enticing. A open door is a "let's go in and see what is in there" signal to the brain. Bright lights goodies on view, pretty colours and flashing lights are all a cheer up signal. Humans are curious. So I think that the doors will remain open!!!
We are "trained" not to look at "what goes on behind closed doors" and not to go "in there" to a dimly lit dark place so mentally we go, like fireflies, to the Mall for a lot of retail therapy, impulse buying and debt!!!
