Coldest time of the year approaches in Scotland and gas supply and now electricity supply prices rocket despite the firms making billions of pounds in profits.
Pity the poorer families who use pre payment meters.Although they can change supplier, it is often the case that they can't "buy" supplies as shopkeepers only take one payment option, normally the most popular in the area.
Should they wish to go on to a billing system they are asked for ridiculous sums for a deposit, £300/£400 sometimes and a fee of about £50 to take out the card machine. This makes changing impossible. Therefore they have absolutely no choice whatsoever but to go with the most popular supplier in their area.
Now if that ain't a cartel then I don't know what is??? Suppliers have divided up the UK, geographically, for the guaranteed income from pre payment machines. But instead of giving them a discount they are charged at the dearest option plus a crazy standing charge plus a charge each week on top for the use of the machine !!!!!
If you don't put money in then you get no electricity and/or gas so the income is no risk to the suppliers.
Of course, desperation leads to crime. Some people just run a cable by-passing the machine which is why meter readers are coming round much more often than they use to in the past. It is sod all to do with whether they are screwing you, it is really to check that you are not screwing them!!!!
